Calling all web vendors: Web Accessibility Training

Update (2016-05-06): Presentation slides available

Slides: NZ Government Web Accessibility Training, Auckland/Wellington May 2016

Staff from private sector IT companies, in particular those delivering web design and development services, are invited to attend a free training session on web accessibility.

The 2014 Web Standards Self-Assessments indicated significant variability in government agencies and commercial web vendors’ knowledge, commitment and expertise with regard to web accessibility. Both agencies and vendors need more accessibility guidance and training.

As part of the Department of Internal Affairs' ongoing plans to help vendors improve their delivery of accessible web content, design, and development services to government, I'll be giving two free presentations on web accessibility.

Presentations for vendors

The same presentation will be held in Auckland and Wellington.

The presentation is divided into two 1hr sessions. The first session is a general introduction to web accessibility, the what and why. It will answer questions such as:

  • What is web accessibility?
  • How do people with disabilities browse the web?
  • Why is it important?
  • What’s required?

In the second hour we'll discuss web technologies, how they work, and what web teams can do to enable access for people with disabilities. Specific topics include:

  • HTML, browsers, accessibility APIs, assistive technologies
  • WCAG 2.0
  • Accessibility for web and native apps
  • Embedding accessibility in your work

  1. Comment #1. Paul:

Great idea, if it’s a success would you consider polling the Christchurch community to see if there are sufficient numbers interested to hold a session down there too. At least one major vendor has Dev teams down there that would like to understand this area better.

  2. Comment #2. Jason Kiss

Thanks for the prompt, Paul. Absolutely, and in fact already thinking of ways to gauge interest down that way.

  3. Comment #3. Rebecca:

Yes please – I second need for a training session in Christchurch. Could I please be included in any communications. Also happy to help.

  4. Comment #4. Jason Kiss

Thanks, Rebecca, for the upvote on a session in Christchurch. I’ll be in touch to follow up.

We’ll put up a blog post when we have new workshops planned. If you haven’t already, you can always register to receive an email notification whenever a new blog post is published.
